Û ÛÛ    Originally drawn by Monotype in 1929, the Bembo design was         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    inspired by the types cut by Francesco Griffo and used by          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Aldus Manutius in 1495 to print Cardinal Bembo’s tract             ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    "de Aetna". A beautiful design with tall ascending lowercase       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    and elegant letterforms, Bembo has been a favourite for book       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    setting for over 70 years. No italic was used in the Aldine        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    "de Aetna" work so another source was needed. This was found       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    in a publication by the writing master, Giovantonio Tagliente,     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    produced in Venice circa 1524.                                     ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    Considered by many to be one of Stanley Morison’s finest           ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    achievements during his tenure as Typographical Advisor to         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    the Monotype Corporation, Bembo has consistently been a best       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    selling typeface, both in its original hot metal form and in       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    today’s digital formats.                                           ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    Not intended to be a facsimile of Manutius’ work, Bembo was        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    drawn to embody the elegance and fine design features of the       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    original but marry them with the consistency of contemporary       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    production methods and to ensure that the typeface would work      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    satisfactorily with high speed printing techniques.                ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    The first phototypesetting and digital versions were based on      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    hot metal nine point drawings. This gave good legibility in        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    small sizes, due to a comparatively large ‘x’ height, but          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    lacked some of the elegance present in larger hot metal sizes.     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ                                                                       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    This new digital version of Bembo, called Bembo Book, has been     ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    designed to be more suited to text setting in the size range       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    from 10 point to 18 point. Based on the hot metal 10/18 point      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    drawings, which were used to cut all sizes from 10 point to        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    24 point, this new face has been carefully drawn to produce        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    similar results to those achieved from the hot metal version       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    when letterpress printed. The project started in 2002 when a       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    high quality UK printing house asked for a digital version of      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Bembo which would give a similar appearance on the page to         ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    the 13 point hot metal they were currently using. Hot metal        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    drawings were digitised and extensive editing was carried out      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    on the resultant outlines to ensure that design features and       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    overall colour from the digital output remained close to that      ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    of the letterpress product.                                        ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    The resultant typeface is slightly narrower than existing          ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    digital versions of Bembo, it is a little more economical in       ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    use and gives excellent colour to continuous pages of text.        ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    Ascending lowercase letters are noticeably taller than             ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    capitals, giving an elegant, refined look to the text.             ÛÛ Û

Û ÛÛ    Available in regular and bold weights with complementary           ÛÛ Û
Û ÛÛ    italics, each font has both lining and old style numerals          ÛÛ Û
