         Note: alaska! is Imaad Wasif, Russ Pollard and
         Lesley Ishino. The name alaska! has nothing to do
         with the state. Rather, it's about the state of
         mind. It is always written in lowercase letters and
         the exclamation point is always included. See
         above.

         alaska!'s first record was called emotions. It was
         released in 2003 on Flying Nun Records.

         Their second album, Rescue Through Tomahawk, is on
         Altitude Records. The songs are written by
         singer/guitarist Imaad Wasif (lowercase 1993-2000)
         and forged into sonic completion with
         bassist/vocalist Russ Pollard (Sebadoh 1997-2000)
         and drummer Lesley Ishino (Red Aunts 1990-1998).
         The trio takes the elements of harmony, discord and
         beauty that are integral to the songs and evolves
         them into a thrashing beast. alaska! is alive. It
         breathes a sound that is pure and heavy. It took
         two years, four tours, and one near-death
         experience for this creature to be born.

         The songs on Rescue Through Tomahawk are the
         culmination of Wasif's romantic vision. They find
         light in dark times. His is a unique voice intent
         on bridging the spaces between love & hate, hope &
         despair and the real & the fake. The formative
         years he spent in the wasteland of the California
         Desert have imbued his songs with a sense for open
         spaces - "A freedom that came to serve in my
         emotional revolution," Wasif says. In the years
         before alaska!, he recorded three albums with the
         obscure, heavy drone-rock duo lowercase, which
         disbanded in 2000.

         alaska!'s debut, emotions, was the result of
         teaming up with multi-instrumentalist Russ Pollard.
         The two recorded and performed the entire record,
         with Pollard adding a new dimension to Wasif's
         songs as well as contributing his own anthem,
         "Broken." Through his travels over the last decade,
         playing drums and bass in various touring bands and
         living in several U.S. cities with differing
         musical climates (Fresno, Louisville, San
         Francisco), Pollard has acquired a distinctive
         sense of rhythm, arrangement and experimentation.
         He brought these qualities to alaska! and to the
         amazing bass-lines and haunting harmonies of Rescue
         Through Tomahawk.

         In 2002, Lesley Ishino (known as the "destroyer" in
         certain circles) was enlisted to play drums for
         alaska!. Her propulsive style and crazy love for
         the skins brought the live energy of the band to
         dangerous levels. Having honed her skills in the
         all-girl punk rock group, The Red Aunts, Ishino
         welcomed the challenge of a new beat. The line-up
         played out in LA for six months before starting on
         a touring schedule that would take them through the
         U.S., Canada, and Europe. Over the next two years,
         their monstrous sound was refined in the chaotic
         swirl of life on the road. After flipping their van
         in a snowstorm in early 2004, Wasif recalls, "we
         began playing the song as if our lives depended on
         it." The shows became an intense celebration of
         survival with the band pushing the performances
         past their limit. "When we walked away from the
         accident, I felt like we had been given another
         chance and we couldn't let it slip away. We needed
         to make this record."

         This sense of urgency became the driving force
         behind the recording of Rescue Through Tomahawk.
         alaska! called on engineer Aaron Prellwitz (Sun Kil
         Moon) and Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco
         to make the album and mixer Brian Deck (Iron &
         Wine, Modest Mouse) to mix the album. The resulting
         record captures their live sound and the raw beauty
         of the songs. "Krystal Korpse" swings from moody,
         haunting verses to a visceral, frenzied chorus,
         exploring the fear and the promise of change, both
         sonically and lyrically. "Through the Years" is a
         more singularly focused meditation on this theme,
         and leads the bandto wander in a timeless,
         fuzzed-out journey. "Kiss You" is a straight shot
         to the heart, an amped-up anthem of amourous
         yearnings the hooks romantic poetry to a new pop
         sensibility.

         Rescue Through Tomahawk is a war cry effort. As a
         whole, it is a twisted opera of confessions and the
         seeking of truths. The songs weave to form the
         story of an undying battle, of going over the edge
         and searching to find a way back. But there is no
         going back. You can only go forward into a new
         unknown. Rescue Through Tomahawk is a lovesick
         letter written from the point of no return.
